As the Lakeshore Lancers prepare to host a deep and challenging Division 2 District next week, they welcomed the Niles Vikings into town. In their first meeting this season, Lakeshore used a commanding 24-0 first quarter run to easily defeat the Vikings 66-13 on their home court. This time around, the Vikings offered a nightmare first quarter which saw Niles block shots and push Lakeshore into a tight 13-10 lead. Lakeshore took control in the second quarter and cruised from there for a 66-34 victory in the SMAC West.
Coming into the game, Lakeshore averaged 52 points per game in the West Division while allowing just 37 points per game. Just twice a West opponent has scored 45 or more points against the Lancer defense. With the victory over Niles tonight, the average scoring difference in SMAC West games was 16.7 points. Lakeshore was 1-2 in games decided by 10 points or less, but two of those games were losses to SMAC West Champion Mattawan. In the seven other games, the Lancers won by 15 or more points in six of them.
The young Vikings squad was led by the only senior starter, Jordon Brown, with 12 points. The Vikings starting five scored a combined 19 points.
Lakeshore was led by Micah Seats (17 pts), Dylan Clem (10 pts), and JJ Bushu (9 pts). The loudest cheers of the game came on a Nate Turner 3-pointer and Robbie Ebeling’s two nothing-but-net free throws. Ja’Kobe Young (4 pts), Ben Brower (4 pts), and Mason Gardiner (2 pts) also saw game action.
The Lancers now head into district play against South Haven on Monday night at 7:30 P.M. The first game will feature Buchanan, supported by one of the best student sections in all of Michigan and a “Battle of the Fans” finalist, “The Herd,” against the Berrien Springs Shamrocks at 5:30 P.M.
