The 5th ranked Zeeland East Chix entered tonight’s pre-district game against 4th seed Lakeshore on a six game win streak. Lakeshore, qualifying for their 21st straight playoff appearance, looked to play spoiler. Zeeland East’s 24 point second quarter was a deciding factor in Lakeshore’s season ending 56-7 loss at Zeeland Stadium.
Lakeshore caused two Chix turnovers on the night, but it was not enough as the Chix first and second string offense scored with running and passing, even late into the fourth quarter. Lakeshore quarterback Jake Trivedi hit a 36 yard pass to Treyjen Keim for the Lancers only score of the game that cut it to 16-7. The Chix scored 16 more points to take a commanding 32-7 lead at halftime. Zeeland connected on all two-point conversion attempts and did not attempt one PAT. The Chix also did not attempt a punt.
Zeeland East, in just their eighth overall playoff appearance, advances to the District Championship game for the first time since 2015 next week against either the St. Joseph Bears, or rival, and football dynasty, Zeeland West Dux.
For Lakeshore, the Lancers completed a season in which they faced six playoff opponents during the regular season. They finish at 5-5, but secured their 31st straight winning regular season (current active longest streak in MHSAA), and their 21 straight playoff appearances is one of the longest active streaks.
