From 2000-2013, the Lakeview Spartans were 1-7 against Lakeshore. Since 2014, Lakeview is now 3-1 with their playoff qualifying 6th win following their 27-7 home victory. The SMAC East leading Spartans, coming off a 2-7 2018 season, have been especially tough at home this season. Lakeshore falls to 2-4 for the first time since 1996.
Lakeview opened the game 1st Quarter with a pick-6 to take an early 7-0 lead, but Jimmy Gillette found Grant Ruddell for a 9-yard touchdown completion in the 2nd Quarter to tie the game 7-7. The Spartans and Lancers would go into halftime tied at 7 all. Lakeview took the lead for good in the 3rd Quarter after blocking their second punt of the game, this time a touchdown return for the 14-7 lead. The Spartans would add their third score deep into the 3rd Quarter for a 20-7 lead over Lakeshore. Lakeview would close out scoring late in the 4th Quarter for the 27-7 lead.
Zeke Rohl led Lancer rushers with 83 yards on 15 attempts. Treyjen Keim ran 8 times for 20 yards. The Lancers had 97 net yards rushing as a team on 29 attempts. Jimmy Gillette completed 9 passes on 25 attempts for 78 yards. Grant Ruddell caught 7 passes for 64 yards, and Logan Miller caught 2 passes for 14 yards. Lakeshore finished with 175 net offensive yards. Ruddell had a strong leg as his five punts traveled for 166 yards, a 33.2 average.
The Lancer defense was paced by Evin Koeppe’s seven tackles including three for a loss. Zeke Rohl added six tackles and Geritt Marshall finished with five tackles.
Lakeshore returns to Al Stockman Stadium next Friday night, October 11th, for Homecoming against Gull Lake. Kick-off has been changed to 5:30 PM. The final home game of the season will be on October 18th against Kalamazoo Central, and the Lancers close out the 2019 regular season at Mattawan on October 25th.
