It has often been said that beating a team three times in the same season is challenging. After two close games with Portage Northern in the regular season, Lakeshore took control early and rolled into Wednesday’s 5PM matchup against Mattawan following their 62-29 victory inside the Bear Den.
Following their last loss to Lakeshore, Portage Northern closed the regular season winning five of their final six games with the only loss coming to Coloma. Within their 5-1 finish to the season, Portage Northern’s overtime victory against cross-town rival Portage Central pushed the SMAC West race into a frenzy between the Lancers and Mustangs. The Huskies entered the Bear Den looking to reverse the results of the first two games between Lakeshore, but a 20-3 first quarter edge by the Lancers proved challenging to overcome.
Most teams this season have struggled to fully slow down the Lancer offensive attack, and many others had to scratch their way past 40 points against the stingy Lakeshore defense. Portage Northern had scored 35 and 46 points against the Lancers this season, but tonight they were held to under 30 points while JJ Bushu and Dylan Clem nearly outscored the Huskies themselves. Bushu led all scorers with 16 points while Clem finished with 11 points.
The Lancers travel back to the Bear Den this Wednesday night for a 5PM District Semifinal against Mattawan. In the opposite bracket, St. Joe will host Kalamazoo Central at 7PM. The Maroon Giants beat Portage Central 85-45 by outscoring the Mustangs 63-23 in the second half.
