The Lakeshore boy’s basketball threw it back to the 1947 MHSAA Class D State Champions for their second SMAC West battle against arch-rival St. Joe. On February 6, 2013, the Baroda Bulldogs made their return to the hardwood in a 28-23 battle against the Bridgman Bees. Seven years later, the Bulldogs set their eyes on the Bears in their long awaited comeback and took control early for the 60-42 victory Friday night inside Lancer Gym.
The Bulldogs led 16-4 after one quarter, and another 13 points in the second quarter, while holding St. Joe to eight points, gave Baroda the 29-12 halftime lead. Both teams were even in the second half as they each scored 30 points.
Baroda’s JJ Bushu had 13 of his game high 18 points in the first half while outscoring the Bears with his ability to get to the free throw line. In total, Bushu made 14 of 15 free throws in a game where Lakeshore attempted 37 free throws (27 made) to the Bears 19 attempts (eight made).
Besides Bushu, Baroda’s Ben Brower and Ben Anderson scored in double figures as each netted 12 points. Just one Bear scored in double digits as St. Joe was led by Conner Wright with ten points.
The Bulldogs had the rebounding edge 35-19 and were led by Gavin Foster (eight) and Brower (six). For the game, Baroda made 16 of 33 field goal attempts (.485%) to the Bears 15-45 (.333%). St. Joe attempted 26 three-pointers making just four.
The Lakeshore Lancers return to their home court on Valentine’s Day for a SMAC West doubleheader against the Portage Northern Huskies. The girl’s game begins around 5:30PM with the boy’s game to follow around 7PM. Just two more boy’s home games take place after next Friday—February 21st against Mattawan and March 3rd against Portage Central.
