Division 2 6th ranked Lakeshore and #7 Niles took care of business in the opening round of the MHSAA District 149 semi-finals to set-up a rematch of last Wednesday’s SMAC West Championship showdown. The Lancers and Vikings did not disappoint the packed gym.
Just like last week, the rematch began at 171 pounds featuring Jake Taylor and Dayton Smith. Smith won with a 6-3 decision providing Niles a 3-0 lead. Dawson Buckner reversed fortunes against Ryan Rush in the 189 pound match winning 5-0, giving Niles a quick 6-0 lead. The Lancers responded with 18 straight points as Zeke Rohl (215) pinned Kenny Krempetz in 1:16, Tyler Hill (285) won by disqualification against Brian Soto, and Riley Bettich (103) pinned Carson Landon in 39 seconds to swing the momentum.
Niles then took their turn winning the next three matches as Jamison Zimmerman (112) moved up to face Bailey DeLaTorre for a 5-4 decision, and the Vikings recorded two pins a row at 119 and 125 for a 21-18 lead. Shane Williams (130) tied the score after his decision over Javond Ball. Niles regained the lead for a third time after Reece Gardner pinned Sam Prince in their 135 match.
In perhaps the biggest match of the night, a battle between Kearri Myrick (140) and Kade Wagley kept the crowd on its feet as a back and forth match saw Myrick stick Wagley in a pin after he closed the score to 9-7. The pin placed Lakeshore and Niles back into a 27-27 tie. Tony Williams (145) picked-up a major decision, and a 31-27 Lakeshore lead, after beating Cole Simpson 12-0. Robert Glover pulled the Vikings within one point after a decision over Alec Austin in their 152 pound match. Much like last week, the winner would be decided by the two contenders at 160.
Cody Carlisle and Gavin Simpson squared off as the crowd fired-up and rose to their feet. Round 1 ended 0-0, but Niles picked up a point in round two to take a 1-0 lead. The closing 16 seconds of the match had both sides erupting as Carlisle scored two points before a penalty point was awarded to Niles, but a 3-2 decision sent Lakeshore into the regional round at home next Wednesday night while Niles finishes the season with just three losses, two to Lakeshore within the last week.
The Lancers will face the winner of the Three Rivers regional. Coldwater will face the winner of the Harper Creek district. Stay tuned to @LHSLancerSports on Twitter and the Lakeshore website for more details.
